H2O with a difference: mineral water with radon
Water containing radon has been pumped from Monte San Vigilio near Merano and used for therapeutic purposes there since the 1960s. In the new Terme Merano, radon water is employed for inhalations and baths. According to the results of the latest tests, the water from Monte San Vigilio has a radon concentration of 481 Bq/l (Becquerel per litre).

Therapeutic properties of mineral water containing radon:

• Soothing and pain-relieving effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems.
For that reason water containing radon is especially recommended for osteoarthrosis and many disorders of the bones, joints and muscles. The therapy comprises a cycle of 6 to 12 individual baths of 15-20 minutes each at a water temperature of 35-37°C.

• Dilatation of the peripheral blood vessels with antihypertensive effects. That means the water is especially indicated for women with chronic disorders of the veins (varicose veins, pathologically dilated capillaries, etc.
The therapy comprises a cycle of 6 to 12 individual baths for 15-20 minutes each.

• Positive effects on the respiratory system – because the water strengthens the natural resistance of the mucous membranes (the immune system) of the respiratory tract.
This therapy involves a series of inhalations (in the form of a mist or facial steam bath) with 2 applications per day in a 6-12 day cycle.

• Benefits for allergy sufferers – because water containing radon has a slightly desensitising effect on the organism’s antigens.

The therapies are only available to patients who have undergone a prior medical check-up with the resident physician at Terme Merano.
